As Stephen L. Center puts it, when I mention integrity, I have something very simple and very clear in mind. Integrity requires three steps:

  1. distinguish what is right from what is wrong,
  2. carry out what you have studied, even at loss, and
  3. state openly that you are doing based on your understanding of what is right and what is wrong.

The first criteria capture the idea of integrity as something that demands some degree of moral reflection. The second stage brings in the idea of someone who has integrity as a steadfast person which includes the feeling of keeping promises. The third stage reminds us that someone with integrity is not shy to do the right thing.
